The live scoreboard that turned the Stonka weigh-in into a show
The Stonka Fishing Challenge is fast becoming one of the biggest fishing competitions in North Queensland. For our second year at Cape Gloucester Resort, we built the event its own live scoreboard, put it on a 4-metre LED screen, and ran sound and lighting across three stages.
- 1,300+anglers registered
- 4days, 6–9 August
- 4mLED screen
- 3linked stages
A scoreboard built for this event
Every fishing competition has a leaderboard. Most are a whiteboard at the weigh-in table that half the crowd never sees. We built Stonka a custom live scoreboard app, designed to look like the event’s own weigh-in sign, and put it on the big screen for everyone.
- 1. A fish hits the scales and staff enter the weight on a laptop at the weigh-in.
- 2. The LED screen updates live, in seconds, with nobody touching it.
- 3. A new leader triggers an announcement and sound effect on the board, and the crowd reacts.
The board tracks every species across reef, pelagic, estuary, spearfishing and crab & cray, in senior, junior and open classes. It also works out the major awards automatically: King and Queen of the Cape, Prince and Princess of the Cape, and the Ultimate Team. No calculators, no arguments, and no waiting for results.
The crowd loved it.
The big screen: close-ups, sponsors and prize draws
The scoreboard ran on a 4m × 3m LED screen, and it did more than show the leaders. A wireless camera sent close-ups of the catches to the screen, so people sitting at the bar could see every fish on the scales. Sponsors got plenty of time on the big screen across all four days. When the boats and the jet ski were given away, the winners went up on the screen for everyone to see.
Three stages, one sound system
The event ran across three stages: the weigh-in stage, the LED screen stage and the entertainment stage. We put speakers at all three and linked them, so every announcement was heard right across the grounds, wherever people were standing.
Bands, entertainment and lighting
We ran production for the entertainment, including the Ally Friendship Band and a Shania Twain tribute, and lit the whole event area so the party carried on well after the sun went down.
Want a live scoreboard for your competition?
Fishing competitions, rodeos, campdrafts, sporting carnivals: if there’s a leaderboard, we can put it on a big screen and make it live. We build the scoreboard around your rules and branding, then supply the LED screen, sound and crew to run it, across Bowen, the Whitsundays and North Queensland.
